The names of Atlantic tropical storms are selected and maintained through a meticulous process overseen by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This practice has been in place since 1953 when naming of tropical storms began. The six lists of names are used in rotation, and each list is recycled every six years. For example, the list used in 2025 will be repeated in 2031. These devastating wind damage storms will cause expensive damages to your home. The time to hire a public adjuster is right after the damage is done to your home or business and before you call your insurance company.
If a storm proves to be exceptionally deadly or costly, and using its name again would be deemed insensitive, the offending name is retired from the list. In such cases, the WMO committee, during its annual meeting, replaces the retired name with a new one. Over the years, several names have been retired due to the severity of the storms they were associated with.
The process of naming storms also considers storms that form outside the typical hurricane season. If a storm forms during the off-season, it takes the next name in the list based on the current calendar date. For instance, a storm forming on December 28th would be named from the previous season’s list.
In the rare event that more than twenty-one named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, or more than twenty-four in the eastern North Pacific basin, any additional storms will be named from an alternate list approved by the WMO for each respective basin. Pronunciation guides are available for the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific basins.
