Do You Have Indoor Evidence Of Roof Damage?

Identifying Indoor Signs of Roof Damage

Homeowners can inspect their homes for evidence of wind damage by carefully examining their attic and finished living areas. Prioritize safety during any inspections, especially when entering the attic. If you’re unable to conduct the inspection safely or feel uncomfortable doing so, reach out to Experienced Public Adjusters for a complimentary and secure evaluation. We are licensed and insured.

Steps to check your attic for potential roof damage from wind, hail, hurricane winds, falling objects, or other causes covered by your insurance policy:

  1. Utilize a headlamp with high lumens for visibility in the dark attic space. If a headlamp is unavailable, use a flashlight, although a headlamp is recommended for hands-free safety.
  2. Inspect for water leaks, damage, or stains on the wood decking (roof’s foundation), broken trusses, clear openings, or signs of water damage on the floor.
  3. Turn off lights and visually scan the roof decking for areas where daylight is entering, indicating potential damage.

In living areas, be vigilant for discolored patches, ceiling separation, active water leaks, mold growth, nail pops, or any anomalies that could signify storm damage. Keep in mind that extended power outages, especially after a hurricane, can lead to high humidity, causing wood expansion and contraction in walls and ceilings, potentially resulting in mold growth within 24-48 hours.
